The Lazarus Effect Continues Northern Dominance

28 April 2026

The Lazarus Effect (NZ) (Lazarus) stamped his credentials as one of the most exciting pacers in New Zealand when he extended his undefeated northern record to three when winning the Group One Dawson Harford Taylor Mile (1609m) at Alexandra Park last Friday.

Trainer-driver Bob Butt was content to sit parked for the initial part of the journey before stoking his charge up when Australian raider Swayzee (Rock N Roll Heaven) was sent forward, and The Lazarus Effect reached the top at the bell.

Butt kept up a solid tempo and asked his charge for more from the 400m and he immediately responded, opening up a growing margin on his rivals.

While his five-length advantage was whittled down to a length at the line, his performance displayed his talent and gave punters a taste of what’s to come.

“I would have liked to have trailed him (Swayzee) but this fella just got too keen and the way the race worked out he was just too good for them,” Butt said.

“Horses like him don’t come along every day. He has had his issues but he is paying us back now.”

The Lazarus Effect is the first foal out of unraced Art Major mare Brook Street, and he was offered through Dunvegan Lodge’s 2022 NZB Standarbred National Yearling Sale at Christchurch where he was purchased for $57,500 by Alabar, who formerly stood his sire Lazarus.

The Lazarus Effect has now won 11 of his starts to date and has earned more than $266,000 in prizemoney.

The Lazarus Effect will remain in Auckland where he will aim to extend his winning run in the Gr.1 Barry Purdon Racing Stables - Roy Purdon Memorial (2200m) at Alexandra Park next Friday.

“The first aim is to go next week (for the Roy Purdon), he thrives on racing,” Butt said.
