Dalgety Filly A Show Stopper In Southern Oaks

Brian West’s Studholme Bloodstock has sold a lot of topline standardbreds through NZB Standardbred’s sales, but he is glad his three-year-old filly Show Stopper (NZ) (Downbytheseaside) slipped through the cracks.

The daughter of Downbytheseaside was offered through his 2024 NZB Standardbred National Yearling Sale draft, but she failed to reach her $25,000 reserve in the sale ring and West elected to retain her to race.

Entrusting her to the care of Cran and Chrissie Dalgety, Show Stopper rewarded him immediately, winning on debut at Addington Raceway last June and placed in her following four starts before returning to the winners’ circle at Wyndham last month.

She returned to Southland on Sunday for her first tilt at stakes level and she didn’t disappoint, leading from go to whoa, holding off the late challenge of local hope Ideal Crown (NZ) (American Ideal) to win by a head in the Group Two Southern Oaks.

Kimberly Butt was in the bike for the first time, taking over the steering from her cousin Carter Dalgety, who elected to drive stablemate The Queens Gambit, and she was rapt to get the winning result.

“Carter said to me before the race that she is such a good leader, she won so well at Gore, so I was a bit surprised when he came and had a look,” Butt said. 

“She got up on the chewy a bit when he got up outside her, but she felt super the whole way. She had to dig deep up the straight to fight them off, so it was a really good win.

“She is just so genuine.”

Out of winning Village Jasper mare Hear The Cheers, Show Stopper is a half-sister to Group Three performer Dream To Share.

She has now won three and placed in four of her eight starts to date and she has earned more than $56,000 in prizemoney.
