6 May 2024
Who’s Delight (NZ) (Bettor’s Delight) produced a dashing display to win the $39,000 Listed Betavet Uncut Gems Geldings & Entires Classic (1980m) at Addington on Friday night.
Driver Gavin Smith’s front-running tactics meant the NZB Standardbred graduate turned the black-type feature into an exciting affair.
Who’s Delight was secured for $130,000 by Diamond Racing when he was offered among the Barron Bloodstock draft at the 2021 National Yearling Sale at Christchurch.
Known as a powerful front-runner, Smith took Who’s Delight straight to the lead from his tough draw in barrier 9.
The four-year-old set a strong tempo, with Smith easing Who’s Delight out to a lead of six-length lead at the 600m.
The rest of the field chased in vain as Who’s Delight maintained his big lead before easing down at the post to register his first stakes race victory for trainers Robert and Jenna Dunn.
The Dunn stable filled the quinella in Friday night’s feature with NZB Standardbred graduate Charlie Brown (NZ) (Art Major) charging home late to run second.
Charlie Brown was purchased by Diamond Racing for $75,000 when he was offered among the Hollis & Robertson Equine Services draft at the 2021 National Yearling Sale at Auckland.
Champion stallion Bettor’s Delight (USA), the sire of Who’s Delight will be represented by eight youngsters at the 2024 National Weanling Sale on May 23.
11 weanlings by Art Major (USA) will also be on offer at Karaka.
