Reid Resisting Australia With Jumal

Dominant three-year-old Jumal (NZ) (Downbytheseaside) was at his brilliant best when recording his third win at elite-level at Addington Raceway last Friday, and while Australia is a massive carrot dangling in front of trainer Steven Reid, he is resisting to bite at the moment.

The NZB Standardbred graduate has been near faultless in his career to date, with his victory in last Friday’s Group One Garrards NZ Sires’ Stakes Series 3YO C&G Final (1980m) being his 12th from 14 starts, having placed in his other two outings, and earned more than $600,000 in prizemoney.

That’s already more than six times what Reid outlayed for the son of Downbytheseaside when purchasing him out of breeder Dave Kennedy’s Beaudiene Breeding draft at the 2024 National Standardbred Yearling Sale in Christchurch.

Following his 3-¾ length victory last Friday, the lure of the riches on offer in Queensland over the coming months have become tempting, including the A300,000 Group The Rising Sun (1660m) and A$150,000 Group One Queensland Derby (2680m), but Reid has ruled out the trip across the Tasman for now.

“Obviously, we have thought about it but I had a chat with Malcolm Wrigley, his majority owner, today and he isn’t that keen on going,” Reid said

“I’d say he will go to the paddock and we will come back to take care of business at the end of the season.

“I might look at some four-year-old racing next season, like a Chariots Of Fire, but we really don’t need to think too much about that now. 

“If we look after him long term he will look after us.”

Jumal is out of Beaudiene Blinkz, a sister to six-time Group One winner Beaudiene Boaz and Group One winner Beaudiene Bad Bade.

While she raced just once as a juvenile, Beaudiene Blinkz is starting to leave her mark as a broodmare, already the dam of three black-type performers, while her yearling full-brother to Jumal was purchased out of Beaudiene Breeding’s NZB Standardbred National Yearling Sale draft earlier this year by Kentuckiana Lodge Ltd for $90,000.
