Penny Black Continues Golden Run in WA
10 November 2025
Penny Black (NZ) (Sweet Lou) continued her purple patch of form in Western Australia when taking out the Group Two Norms Daughter Classic (2130m) at Gloucester Park on Friday night.
The five-year-old mare won three of her previous four tilts at stakes level and was duly backed into $3.20 second favouritism behind stablemate Heavenly Gipsy, who had the services of Penny Black’s regular driver Emily Suvaljko.
Stuart McDonald jumped in the bike behind the Michael Young-trained mare for the first time, and the pair immediately clicked.
From her wide draw, Penny Black was taken back to sit off the hot early speed. The daughter of Sweet Lou was asked to improve three-wide at the bell and was made to work hard before she was pushed four-wide by fellow Kiwi-bred Aardiebytheseaside (NZ) (Downbytheseaside).
Penny Black continued on her forward run and entered a duel with Aardiebytheseaside, with the pair going head-to-head down the straight before Penny Black pulled away in the last 50m to win by 4.5m.
Penny Black was offered through Dunvegan Lodge’s 2021 NZB Standardbred National Yearling Sale draft at Christchurch where she was passed in after failing to reach her $10,000 reserve.
She was subsequently entrusted to the care of Pukekohe trainer Jeremy Young before being sold to her current ownership group following her maiden win at Alexandra Park in December, 2023.
She made an instant impact in Western Australia, winning her first six starts, and she has continued to go from strength-to-strength, having now won 16, including six at stakes level, and placed in 11 of her 35 career starts, and has earned north of A$350,000 in prizemoney.
