Bright Future Tipped For The Lazarus Effect
5 November 2025
The Lazarus Effect (NZ) (Lazarus) continues to go from strength-to-strength, with the four-year-old gelding breaking through for his first stakes victory in the Listed NZB Standardbred Yearling Sales Aged Classic (2400m) at Kaikoura on Monday.
The Bob Butt-trained and driven gelding had won five and placed in two of his previous eight starts and was duly backed into a hot $1.70 favourite.
He began well from his front-row draw and was taken straight to the front by Butt, who dictated terms throughout. He asked his charge to improve from the 400m and he quickly responded, opening up several lengths on his rivals heading into the home straight, and he ran away to a decisive seven-length victory.
“We took luck out of it,” Butt said. “He’s come back really well this time in. He’s a sound happy horse so it’s onwards and upwards hopefully.”
The Canterbury horseman was delighted to get the win in the colours of Alabar Stud and their syndicate of owners.
“It’s great for the syndicate, they are a great bunch of guys,” he said.
The Lazarus Effect is the first foal out of unraced Art Major mare Brook Street, and was offered through Dunvegan Lodge’s 2022 NZB Standarbred National Yearling Sale at Christchurch where he was purchased for $57,500 by Alabar, who formerly stood his sire Lazarus.
He won on debut last October and has continued on an upward trajectory, having now won six and placed in two of his nine starts to date, and has accrued nearly $90,000 in prizemoney.
